The MacRumors editors put news discussion threads in the Political News forum when news stories are inherently political or about controversial topics.
Why are there two news forums?
The MacRumors.com News Discussion forum holds most news discussion threads. It is visible to everyone, logged in or not, but posts about politics and social issues are not permitted. This helps prevent posts likely to cause heated arguments and/or take the discussion off-topic from being made by new or infrequent forum members.
The Political News forum holds news discussion threads about political and controversial topics. It is visible to everyone expect those who choose to block it (see Why can't I see the Political News forum?). Posting in this forum is permitted only by users who meet certain requirements. This limits forum posting privileges to those who are expected to engage with others responsibly while discussing controversial subjects.
Requirements for posting in the Political News forum
- You have been a forum member for at least 1 month.
- You have made at least 100 posts in other forums where posts are counted (most other forums).
- You have not been blocked from posting in the Political News forum for failure to follow the forum rules, including the MacRumors Rules for Appropriate Debate.
Summary
- MacRumors.com News Discussion forum: full access; political posts prohibited
- Political News forum: limited access; on-topic political posts permitted
The MacRumors editors are aware of this tradeoff. For each news story, they decide where the placement of the news discussion thread will best serve site visitors and forum members.
Tip
If you're planning to comment on a political or social issue, check which forum the thread is in before posting.
